The energy group Suur-Savon Sähkö distilled its sustainability work into an inspiring story

The lake-region-based energy group Suur-Savon Sähkö wanted to create a shared language and a unifying thread for the entire group’s sustainability communications.

The result was the company’s sustainability narrative, centered around its customers: “Everyone deserves clean energy.”

What was this about?

Suur-Savon Sähkö is a lake-region-based Finnish energy group. The company owns electricity production assets in Finland and Sweden. Its business includes electricity and telecom networks in Eastern Finland, heat production, nationwide electricity sales, and the development of new solar parks.

Previously, Suur-Savon Sähkö reported on sustainability specifically for its electricity and heat networks, but is now expanding its reporting to cover all business operations. At the same time, there was a need to create a unified narrative to guide the group’s sustainability communications.

The goal was to create a cohesive and impactful sustainability story for the group—one that supports consistent communication across all units and encourages both employees and customers to engage with the company’s sustainability work. The narrative and key messages needed to reflect the entire group’s operations while also resonating with each business line individually.

What did we do?

We began by immersing ourselves in Suur-Savon Sähkö’s sustainability work and operations, and by working with the client to define the project’s goals and scope. We facilitated two workshops with company leadership, sustainability experts, and communicators from subsidiaries.

In the first workshop, we delved into the group’s sustainability goals, practical work, and challenges. Based on the insights gathered, we developed an initial version of the sustainability narrative and key messages, which we refined together in the second workshop.

When shaping the narrative, we paid particular attention to making it concrete, comprehensive, and honest yet inspiring—reflecting both the strengths and challenges of the company’s sustainability journey.

Before finalizing, we tested the narrative and messages with the company’s staff to ensure they were resonant and easy to adopt. Finally, we distilled the narrative into a clear, visual presentation that brings the story to life and communicates the whole concept at a glance.

How did it go?

In our discussions with Suur-Savon Sähkö, it became clear that customers play a critical role in the company’s sustainability efforts. The green transition simply can’t succeed without them. The company wants to support its customers in making more sustainable choices and to ensure no one is left behind.

The core idea of the narrative was captured in two statements: “Everyone deserves clean energy” and “A sustainable energy future is built together”. The key messages were built around three main themes:

  • Decisively toward zero emissions – one action at a time
  • Ensuring everyone keeps pace in the energy transition
  • Building a thriving Lake Finland with care for its greenery

Each theme was supported by sub-messages detailing specific actions and challenges. The full narrative and key messages were brought together in a comprehensive visualization that illustrated the company’s various operations and their impact.

The sustainability narrative and key messages received positive feedback from employees already during the testing phase of the project.
