The GloWater Project Accelerates Finland’s Water Stewardship Efforts

We help the GloWater research project strengthen its societal impact, including through a Water Stewardship Masterclass for businesses.

Client: Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), GloWater Project

Project period: 2025–

We serve as the project’s communications and stakeholder engagement partner, supporting its goal of developing policy recommendations, governance instruments and practical approaches for sustainable water security together with key stakeholders. The GloWater project is funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC) at the Research Council of Finland.

Water is a Strategic Issue for Businesses

More than half of Finns’ water consumption takes place outside Finland through companies’ value chains. At the same time, these value chains expose Finnish businesses to water-related risks around the world. Water is no longer just a production input. Increasingly, it is a strategic sustainability and risk management issue that affects companies’ social licence to operate, resilience and long-term competitiveness.

Businesses therefore play a key role in advancing sustainable water security. Together with the GloWater project, we have developed and are delivering the Water Stewardship Masterclass for businesses. The Masterclass brings together researchers, companies and other key stakeholders to develop practical approaches to water stewardship. It combines the latest research, company case studies and peer learning through facilitated workshops and online peer-learning sessions.

More than 20 leading Finnish and Nordic companies have committed to the Water Stewardship Masterclass. The Masterclass translates cutting-edge research into practical solutions for businesses while strengthening a shared understanding of water security challenges and opportunities across sectors. The work contributes to the development of practical approaches, governance instruments and policy recommendations that support the sustainable and equitable use of water resources.

Research that Informs Decision-Making

Sustainable water security is closely connected to a wide range of ongoing decision-making processes at the national, EU and UN levels. At the beginning of the project, we identified and prioritised, in the communications and stakeholder engagement strategy, the policy processes to which the project could contribute research-based knowledge.

The relevance of the project has been recognised across government, and there is a clear demand for the knowledge we produce. Rather than creating our own policy processes, we aim to contribute our research where it is most needed,” says Suvi Sojamo, Lead Researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute.
