It’s Slush week in Helsinki! Amid the start-up hype and lasers there are also lots of events where science takes center stage. Here are our top five picks for finding science at Slush and around it:
Monday Dec 3:
Skolar Award Premiere
18:00–20:00
The pre-event of the Slush Research Pitching competition. At this event, you will get a sneak preview of the eight research pitches competing for a €100K Skolar Award and mingle with bright science minds. Speakers and commentators include professor of bioengineering Miiri Kotche from the University of Illinois, science reporter Henry Tikkanen from Yle Kioski and science communication superstar and brain researcher Minna Huotilainen. Arrive on time to hear the pitches and get a glass of bubbly!

Slush Y Science: An evening at Kiila

Cross the street to get from O’Leary’s to Kiila for a life sciences meet and mingle. Light get-together program empowered by The Science Basement.

Tuesday Dec 4:
Science and the City + Slush Y Science pre-show
17:00–20:00
University of Helsinki hosts an evening of science and startups. Topics include life sciences, new advancements in 5G technology, data science and climate research. The evening kicks of with the full dress rehearsal of the Life Science Pitching competition before the finalists enter the big stage at Slush. Easy mingling, mixing science and business people. Quality talks on stage, meeting area downstairs. The event is free and open for everyone, no registration required.

Wednesday Dec 5:
Slush Y Science
09:00–12:00
Life Science Pitching finals 10:00–11:00
All life science enthusiasts, this is for you! Speakers include top names from research funders to VC’s and biotech companies. The event includes the Life Science Pitching finals, where early-stage startups compete for a 30K prize.
Y Science is an official side event of Slush, so it’s happening next to the main Slush area at the Messukeskus Siipi congress centre. The access is free but requires reserving your spot to the event on their website.

Slush Research Pitching Competition: Skolar Award
14:05–15:30
The main (and somewhat legendary) science and research session at Slush. Post-doc researchers from all fields of science compete for a whopping 100K prize to fund their research. You don’t want to miss this!
Researchers show their brilliant ideas to the bigger audience and find new potential for collaboration within the broader tech scene. Pitching starts at 14:05, and the Skolar Award winner will be announced at 15:20. You’ll also enjoy a great panel discussion on narrowing the gap between academia and the startup community while you wait for the judges to reach their tough decision.
